For several centuries, it was believed that our genes were what made us sick.

You either had “good genes” and therefore would be a healthy person or you had “bad genes” which would make you sick. In this paradigm, there was little control that we as individuals had over our health.

Science is now coming to new understandings that genetics only play a small role (around 5%) in illness. This is exciting news since it means we have more control over our health!
