Use of a moxa, made from dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), is rolled into a pea-sized cone, placed point up on an acupuncture point and burned almost to the skin or in some cases to the skin; the smoldering cone is extinguished after a few seconds. The patient will experience a pleasant heating sensation, but no pain. It is believed to expel the cold and warm the meridians (energy pathways), leading to improved energy flow and circulation.
